YOSAKOI Soran Festival – Sapporo’s Energetic Dance Celebration

YOSAKOI Soran Festival – Sapporo’s Energetic Dance Celebration
The YOSAKOI Soran Festival is one of Sapporo’s most vibrant and energetic events, held every June. It combines the dynamic dance style of Yosakoi—originating from Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan—with Soran Bushi, a traditional folk song from Hokkaido sung by fishermen.

What is Yosakoi?
Yosakoi is a modern style of Japanese dance that blends traditional moves with contemporary music and choreography. Performers carry naruko (wooden clappers) in their hands, which they snap in rhythm as part of the dance. The style allows for creative costumes, high-energy movement, and music that mixes traditional and modern elements.

When

Early to mid-June (usually over 5 days)

Main events take place in Odori Park, with parade-style performances along streets in central Sapporo, and smaller stages set up in various parts of the city.

What to Expect
- Over 250 teams from across Japan—and sometimes abroad—compete and perform in colorful costumes.
- The only rules: dancers must carry naruko, and their music must include a phrase from the Soran Bushi song.
- Performances range from traditional fisherman-inspired movements to elaborate modern productions with large props and visual effects.

- Best Viewing: The parade routes near Odori Park offer close-up views, but arrive early for a good spot.
- Photography: Bright costumes and high-speed movement make for great photos—bring a fast lens if you’re a photographer.
- What to Wear: Comfortable shoes and breathable clothing; early June is mild but can be sunny, so a hat and sunscreen are recommended.
