A Legacy of History and Architecture

Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Office)

Built in 1888 during the Meiji period, this remarkable building served as Hokkaido’s main administrative center for nearly 80 years. Constructed in an American Neo-Baroque style, it showcases an elegant octagonal dome and intricate features such as period-era warped glass and heat-retaining double doors. The exterior features 2.5 million red bricks, produced in nearby Toyohira and Shiroishi villages.

After a devastating fire in 1909, it was fully restored in 1911, with the original dome and ventilation towers reinstated to their former glory. In 1969, it was designated a National Important Cultural Property, cementing its status as a significant heritage landmark.

From 2019 to March 2025, the building underwent a major restoration to preserve its historic integrity. Renovations included:

As of July 25, 2025, the Red Brick Office has reopened in renewed splendour, featuring enhanced exhibition spaces, an accessible octagonal tower balcony with panoramic views, and a planned on-site restaurant and event rental facilities—including space for weddings, exhibits, and more.

Visitors requiring a slope should proceed to the south-side slope of the Red Brick Office and press the intercom for entry.

Persons presenting a Disability Certificate, Rehabilitation Certificate, or Mental Disability Health and Welfare Certificate (including the “Mirairo ID” app) will be granted free admission for themselves and one caregiver (up to two caregivers for wheelchair users).
