The Meaning Behind the Name

The name “Hito-Tsu Nabe” originates from an episode in Hokkaido’s pioneering history. During the Meiji era, a group called Banseisha was formed by people with a strong ambition to develop Hokkaido. In the harsh early days of settlement, food was scarce, and meals were often poor. One of the settlers, Katsumi Watanabe, lamented that their meals were “no better than what pigs eat.” In response, Benzo Yoda, one of Hokkaido’s founding figures, poetically remarked, “In the beginning of cultivation, we share one pot with the pigs.” This phrase inspired the name of this monaka, symbolizing the perseverance and resilience of Hokkaido’s pioneers.
