Yamaoyaji – A Hokkaido Butter Biscuit

Yamaoyaji (山親爺, Yama Oyaji) is a long-selling confection produced by Senshu-an Seika Co., Ltd. (千秋庵製菓株式会社). First released in 1930, it has been loved by Hokkaido locals for nearly a century.

The name “Yamaoyaji” literally means “mountain old man,” a traditional nickname for the bear that once roamed Hokkaido’s wilderness. Each biscuit is embossed with a relief of a skiing bear carrying a salmon, a motif that reflects the region’s unique culture and humor.

Made with high-quality butter, milk, and eggs, Yamaoyaji is a Western-style baked confection with a crisp texture, rich buttery flavor, and the gentle aroma of eggs. It continues to be a beloved treat and a popular souvenir from Hokkaido.
