Aurora Town – Sapporo Underground Shopping Street

Aurora Town (オーロラタウン) is one of Sapporo’s two major underground shopping streets, stretching from Odori Station and connecting seamlessly with nearby subway lines. Opened in 1971, it has long been a favorite spot for both locals and tourists, offering convenient shopping and dining in the comfort of an underground space that protects visitors from Sapporo’s cold winters and hot summers.

Aurora Town

Shopping

Aurora Town offers plenty of shopping options, including clothing boutiques, accessory shops, and lifestyle stores, making it a great spot to pick up both practical items and souvenirs. You’ll also find stores selling Hokkaido-themed souvenirs, making it a convenient place to pick up gifts before heading back to your hotel or the airport.

Dining

The underground street is also home to casual eateries, bakeries, cafés, and restaurants. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack, a warm bowl of ramen, or sweets to take home, Aurora Town has plenty of options to satisfy your appetite.

Convenience & Atmosphere

Aurora Town is directly connected to Odori Subway Station (Namboku, Tozai, and Toho lines), making it extremely easy to access. The underground walkway also connects to Pole Town, another underground shopping street that leads all the way to Susukino, Sapporo’s entertainment district, and to Tanukikoji Shopping Street, one of Sapporo’s most famous covered arcades.

Because it’s underground, Aurora Town is especially useful in the winter when heavy snow makes walking outside difficult. The street is bright, spacious, and lined with seasonal decorations, creating a pleasant and lively atmosphere year-round.
