Yoitomake – A Unique Hokkaido Confection

Yoitomake is a distinctive rolled sponge cake from Hokkaido, particularly famous in the city of Fukagawa. It features a soft sponge filled with a layer of sweet and tangy haskap (blue honeysuckle) jam, then rolled and coated with more jam on the outside for a glossy finish. The result is a moist, fruity dessert with a balance of sweet and slightly tart flavors.

What Does “Yoitomake” Mean?
The name comes from a Japanese work chant used by laborers, especially in fishing or logging, to keep rhythm while working. “Yoitomake” (ヨイトマケ) roughly translates to “heave-ho” or “pull together”. The dessert was named to convey a sense of Hokkaido’s hardworking spirit and strong community ties.

Why It’s Special
- Made with haskap berries, a fruit native to Hokkaido, known for its rich antioxidants and unique flavor.
- Often considered a nostalgic treat for locals, as it has been sold for decades.
- The vivid purple-red color of the jam makes it eye-catching as a gift or souvenir.
💡 Tip: Yoitomake can be found in selected confectionery shops in Sapporo and is best enjoyed fresh. If buying as a souvenir, check the shelf life—many versions have a relatively short expiry date due to their moist texture.
