Yoitomake – A Unique Hokkaido Confection

Yoitomake – A Unique Hokkaido Confection

Yoitomake is a distinctive rolled sponge cake from Hokkaido, particularly famous in the city of Fukagawa. It features a soft sponge filled with a layer of sweet and tangy haskap (blue honeysuckle) jam, then rolled and coated with more jam on the outside for a glossy finish. The result is a moist, fruity dessert with a balance of sweet and slightly tart flavors.

What Does “Yoitomake” Mean?

The name comes from a Japanese work chant used by laborers, especially in fishing or logging, to keep rhythm while working. “Yoitomake” (ヨイトマケ) roughly translates to “heave-ho” or “pull together”. The dessert was named to convey a sense of Hokkaido’s hardworking spirit and strong community ties.
